Youxin Zhang, Instructional Designer, UH Kapiʻolani Community College

Thursday, April 29, 2021 4:00-5:30 pm HST

This workshop will be followed by a H-PEA online Social, 5:30-6:00 pm HST

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

Spice up your visual storytelling in your reporting and presentations! Join an instructional designer and an analyst as they share how to choose appropriate charts depending on context. Discover new tools that will make your graphics shine on the page or screen.

Bring a working knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets, as well as a desire to collaborate, to this highly interactive session. Once design principles are explored, breakout groups will create their own visuals from across a variety of disciplines, reflecting the diversity of our H-PEA members. You will walk away with a new network of data viz colleagues, a resource list to help you apply what you learned, and the confidence that you are democratizing information for your stakeholders.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  1. Understand the context of the data visualization (e.g. audience, format)
  2. Apply different elements to graphics in order to create more effective designs
  3. Explain different types of data and the implications for visual data encoding
