WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Now more than ever, evaluators need to be visionary and reflect on the long-term aims of their practice, such as social equity and sustainability. They also need to include in their evaluation tool-kit foresight methods that 'future-proof' their evaluation designs and findings. In this Workshop, participants will learn the widely-used foresight method, environmental scanning (also referred to as 'Horizon Scanning'), which can be integrated into one's evaluation practice and designs. For example, environmental scanning can inform a contextual analysis, providing information on changes in the environment that might change the trajectory of a project. Scanning can also be used developing more robust findings that anticipate the future and inform stakeholder and program strategy. A hands-on session, participants will identify key trends in their respective evaluation contexts and learn approaches to working with trends, such as extrapolation and cross-impact analysis. Suggestions for incorporating scanning in one's practice will be discussed.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
1. expand their knowledge of foresight concepts and methods and their importance in linking evaluation to strategy;
2.be supported in their adoption of foresight methods, in particular environmental scanning and the monitoring of trends that shape a program or policy;
3. be better equipped to provide communities, organizations, and individuals with information to better navigate a rapidly changing and complex world.
