WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
Evaluators have been skillfully utilizing Excel and Google Sheets to collect, organize, and analyze data for years. However, the data visualization and interactivity of these tools have not been thoroughly explored and utilized by much of the evaluation community. This skill-building workshop will introduce novice users to Slicers, a feature available in Excel and Google Sheets, which can be used to develop interactive dashboards that rival those of other more cost prohibitive BI-tools. Using sample data, attendees will learn how to a) format raw data, b) generate a pivot table, c) incorporate slicers and d) create professional, interactive dashboards with multiple filters. This skill-building workshop will utilize real world survey data to demonstrate how Excel Slicers can transform a spreadsheet into a professional, interactive dashboard through 5 easy-to-learn steps.

ABOUT THE PRESENERS

elly Engelman, Ph.D., is the Director of Research and Evaluation at Custom Edu Eval LLC in Austin, TX. She earned her PhD in Social Psychology and has over 10 years of evaluation experience, and has served as a lead data analyst on over 40 federal and state funded grants and programs. Since 2018, Dr. Engelman has led over 20 workshops and webinars on designing interactive dashboards in Excel for a variety of clients, including the University of Texas at Austin, the American Evaluation Association, and the Asia Foundation. To date, she has trained over 250 researchers and evaluators in designing interactive dashboards to display both survey and institutional data using best practices.
Tom Withee is a Senior Researcher at Goshen Education Consulting Inc and is their data visualization expert. Tom is an active member of the American Evaluation Association through leadership in the STEM TIG and a founding member of the Evaluation Association of St. Louis. Since 2019, Tom has led several workshops on designing interactive dashboards using both Excel and Google Sheets for evaluators and researchers in various fields.
